Police report massive losses since 2021, with only a tiny fraction recovered.
Since 2021, over 28,000 cases of various scams have been reported to the Maldives Police Service. The scale of the problem continues to grow year after year.
Of the 150 million MVR lost by victims, only about 1 million has been successfully recovered, leaving thousands of Maldivians without their hard-earned money.

Social media platforms become the top source for online trading fraud in the country.
Facebook Marketplace has recorded the highest number of scam cases tracked by the Bank of Maldives in 2023. Unverified sellers and risky direct transfers are the main cause.
Buyers are often asked to send money directly to a stranger's bank account. Once the payment is sent, the seller disappears, and the buyer is left with nothing.
